Saying No

Stryg for at vise menuen

The most under-practiced productivity skill is not getting more efficient. It's saying no.

Most overload comes from one cause: you keep saying yes. To meetings, to projects, to favors, to opportunities, to events. Each yes feels small. Twenty yeses over a month feel crushing.

People often blame their workload. The workload is the result of yeses you said three weeks ago.

Every yes you commit to is a no to something else — your sleep, your important work, your family, your sanity. You're not choosing whether to spend the time. You're choosing where.

Three Scripts That Work

1. The considered no.

"Let me check my commitments and get back to you tomorrow."

This buys you 24 hours. Most yeses are emotional reflexes. Sleeping on it converts half of them to no's.

2. The polite but firm no.

"Thanks for thinking of me. I can't take this on right now without dropping something else, and I don't want to do that."

No long explanation. No fake apology. Two sentences. Most people accept this gracefully.

3. The alternative offer.

"I can't do X, but I could do Y."

A smaller version. A different timeline. A referral to someone better suited. Useful when the relationship matters.

What Not To Say

  • Don't say "I'm too busy" — implies it's about your schedule and invites negotiation;
  • Don't apologize three times — makes the no feel like a problem rather than a clear answer;
  • Don't lie about why — people remember, and lies compound.

You'll be bad at this at first. Then ok. Then it becomes automatic. The people who can say no run lighter, better, more sustainable lives than the people who say yes to everything. By a lot.
