Brainstorming and Crazy 8

Definition

Brainstorming is a group discussion where participants generate ideas to solve a problem. These sessions are often chaotic, with overlapping conversations and a flood of ideas.

Brainstorms are often chaotic—everyone talks over each other, ideas pile up, and by the end, we're exhausted but not necessarily any wiser. It feels productive in the moment, but in the long run, nothing really changes. We talk for an hour and then move on.

To fix this, we need to organize everything—not with rigid, military-grade rules, but just enough structure to turn creativity into something actionable. In this chapter, we'll explore ideation methods, starting with a fast-paced technique before diving into others that are both effective and fun.

The method is called Crazy 8, and it's about each team member generating 8 ideas in 8 minutes!

Preparation
expand arrow
  • Materials Needed: Each participant needs a blank sheet of paper and a pen or pencil.
  • Time Setting: Set a timer for 8 minutes.
Folding the Paper
expand arrow
  • Fold the paper in half three times to create eight sections (panels).
  • When unfolded, the paper will have eight equal sections.
Setting the Challenge
expand arrow
  • Define the problem or design challenge clearly.
  • Ensure everyone understands the goal.
Generating Ideas
expand arrow
  • Each participant has 8 minutes to sketch 8 different ideas, one in each section of the folded paper.
  • Encourage quick, rough sketches. Perfection is not the goal.
  • Each idea should be a separate, distinct solution to the problem.
Time Management
expand arrow
  • Spend approximately 1 minute per idea.
  • If participants finish early, they can refine their sketches.
  • The emphasis is on quantity and variety.
Sharing and Discussing
expand arrow
  • Once the timer ends, participants share their sketches with the group.
  • Discuss the ideas, highlighting interesting concepts and potential solutions.
Refinement and Selection
expand arrow
  • As a group, identify the most promising ideas.
  • Refine and develop them further in the design process.
