Installing Astra

Selecting and Installing Astra

A WordPress theme determines the visual appearance and layout of a website. It defines page structure, font and color usage, and the styling of interface elements such as menus and buttons. As this course utilizes the Block Editor (Gutenberg), it is important to select a theme that is fully compatible with block-based editing to ensure optimal functionality and user experience. For this project, the theme Astra will be used—a lightweight, flexible, and highly customizable option that integrates seamlessly with Gutenberg.

Why Is Astra Used?

WordPress offers thousands of free and premium themes, but Astra is chosen because:

It's optimized for the Block Editor – meaning it's fully compatible with Gutenberg and ensures a smooth editing experience;
It's lightweight and fast, which helps websites load quickly;
It comes with free Starter Templates, allowing us to import a pre-designed website and customize it without coding;
It provides flexibility, making it great for both beginners and advanced users.

Installing the Astra Theme

To install Astra:

In your WordPress dashboard, go to Appearance → Themes;
Click Add New and type Astra in the search bar;
Click Install, then Activate.

Once activated, Astra becomes the default theme, preparing the site for Starter Template import in the next lesson.
