To start using Claude Code, install it on your computer using the official documentation. Choose the instructions for your operating system and preferred installation method. On macOS, Claude Code can be installed directly through the terminal.

After installation, type claude in the terminal to launch the setup process. You can then select an interface theme and choose how to authenticate.

Connecting Your Claude Account

The setup opens Claude in your browser and asks you to sign in. In the workflow shown, Claude Code requires a Claude Pro or Max subscription.

After signing in:

  1. Approve Claude Code’s access to your account.
  2. Copy the authorization code if requested.
  3. Paste it into the terminal.
  4. Confirm the recommended security settings.
  5. Mark the current project folder as trusted.

Claude Code can now work inside that folder and respond directly in the terminal. You can confirm the installation with a simple test prompt.
