Formatter by Zapier

Formatter by Zapier is a built-in tool that transforms and cleans data between steps in a Zap, handling text, numbers, dates, and utilities without counting toward your task quota.
Data rarely arrives in the format you need. Text, dates and emails often require cleanup before they can be used reliably.
Formatter sits between steps to clean and transform data before it moves on. Think of it as a quick pit stop that prepares data for the next action.
Formatter steps are free and don't count as tasks, so you can use them without affecting your task limit.
Adding Formatter to a Zap
Formatter can be added at any point in a Zap where data needs to be cleaned, reshaped, or standardized before moving to the next step. It works as a helper step that prepares your data so downstream actions receive exactly what they expect.
- Click the + button to add a new step;
- Search for Formatter by Zapier;
- Select it (no external account connection needed, it's built into Zapier);
- Choose the transformation type from the dropdown
Formatter is organized into four main categories:
String manipulation, including capitalization, trimming, and find/replace operations.
Math operations and number formatting.
Date reformatting, calculations, and comparisons.
Lookup tables, default values, and splitting text.
Each category contains multiple specific actions.
Text Transformations
Text formatting handles anything involving strings: names, email addresses, descriptions, and any written content.
Setup takes seconds and ensures every name flowing through your Zap looks professional.
Another common issue is whitespace, an invisible problem that often leads to frustrating debugging. Trim Whitespace removes extra spaces from the beginning and end of text, preventing broken lookups and mismatches.
You can also extract specific data from text. For example, Extract Email Domain pulls the domain from an email address, which is useful for segmentation, routing, and analytics. Additional text actions include:
There are also Number, Date/Time, and Utility transformations for calculations, formatting, and logic-heavy cleanup.
Number tools handle math, currency formatting, and spreadsheet-style formulas. Date/Time tools fix formats, adjust time, and compare dates. Utility tools cover edge cases like lookups, defaults, and splitting text into usable pieces.
Together, these transformations remove the need for spreadsheets or custom scripts in most workflows.
