The Inbox Problem

In 2024, Microsoft researchers coined a phrase: the infinite workday.
Salaried knowledge workers in the US now check email, Slack, or other work apps an average of 70 times a day. The day starts at 6 AM with phone-in-bed and ends at 10 PM with one-last-Slack. No breaks. No off-hours. The unit isn't a workday — it's an infinite stream of pings.
The cost: every ping resets your focus. UC Irvine research found it takes 23 minutes to fully recover focus after an interruption. Average knowledge worker in this model never actually reaches focus.
Three Fixes That Cost Nothing
1. Turn off most notifications by default.
Open settings on your phone, on your laptop, in every chat app. Default off, exception on:
- Phone calls and messages from named family members → on;
- Slack, Teams, Discord pings → off;
- Email pings → off;
- News, social, shopping → off forever.
Yes, you'll worry about missing something. You won't. Urgent things have a way of reaching you.
2. Batch process inbox.
Don't check email continuously. Pick two or three windows per day — say 10 AM, 1 PM, 4 PM. Process the inbox during those windows only. Outside them, the inbox doesn't exist.
This is the biggest single change most knowledge workers can make. It feels strange for a week and natural after a month.
3. Set a hard end-of-day.
Pick a time — 6 PM, 7 PM, whatever — when work apps close. Not "I'll check at 9 PM real quick." Actual close. Sign out. Move the app off your home screen. Whatever it takes.
The infinite workday isn't really a productivity problem. It's a sustainability problem. You can't focus, sleep, recover, or live if pings own your nervous system.
The first chapter of recovery is killing the buzz. Tonight.
1. What is the average number of times a knowledge worker checks email or work apps per day according to Microsoft researchers?
2. Which of the following is NOT one of the three fixes to the infinite workday mentioned in the chapter?
