The Core Story Framework

Every strong data story follows a simple structure:

  1. Setup – Context
    • Where are we now?
    • What are we measuring?
  2. Conflict – Problem or Opportunity
    • What changed?
    • What is not working as expected?
  3. Resolution – Insight & Action
    • Why did it happen?
    • What should we do next?

Instead of: "Traffic increased by 20%."

Say: "Traffic increased by 20%, but conversion remained flat, suggesting the new audience segment is less aligned with our offer. We recommend refining targeting and optimizing the landing page."

Common Mistakes

  • Showing 10 dashboards;
  • No explanation;
  • No recommendation.

Effective Approach

  • Highlight 1–3 key visuals;
  • Explain what changed;
  • Explain why;
  • Provide a clear next step.
