Understanding How Websites and the Internet Work

Every website you open follows a process behind the scenes. Your browser sends requests, servers respond with files and data, and the browser renders everything into a visual interface. Understanding this workflow makes frontend development feel much more logical.

What Happens When You Open a Website?

When you open a website, your browser sends a request through the Internet to a server. A server is simply a computer that stores website files and sends them back to users when requested.

The server responds with files such as:

  • HTML;
  • CSS;
  • JavaScript;
  • images;
  • videos.

Your browser then reads these files and renders the webpage on the screen.

Understanding the Browser

A browser is the application used to access websites. Examples include: Google Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Microsoft Edge.

Browsers are responsible for downloading website files, processing code, and displaying the final interface users interact with.

Modern browsers also include developer tools that help developers inspect and debug webpages.

How Frontend and Backend Connect

Frontend applications often communicate with backend systems through APIs. The frontend handles the user interface, while the backend manages things like databases, authentication, and business logic.

For example, when you log into a website or search for products in an online store, the frontend communicates with backend services to fetch and display data.
