Motivation Is The Wrong Goal

Veeg om het menu te tonen

How do you feel about doing the work you should do today?

If the answer determines whether the work happens, you have a problem.

Motivation is unreliable. It rises and falls based on sleep, mood, weather, what you ate, what your boss said, whether the project is new or stale. Anyone who has tried to write a book, run consistently, or learn an instrument knows this. Some days you're inspired. Most days you're not.

If you wait to feel like it, the average week produces two productive days and five lost ones.

Systems Replace Motivation

A system is a small set of rules you follow regardless of how you feel:

  • "I write for one hour at 9 AM, then stop";
  • "I exercise three mornings a week, on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday";
  • "I close email at 5 PM, no exceptions."

Systems work because they remove the decision. You're not deciding whether to write — you're just at 9 AM. You're not deciding whether to exercise — it's Tuesday.

The cost of a tiny daily rule is far less than the cost of relitigating the decision every day.

Two Implications

1. Design your system for your worst day, not your best. The system that works only when you're inspired isn't a system — it's a hobby.

2. Small wins compound. One hour of writing every weekday, sustained for a year, produces a finished book. Three hours of inspired writing once a month produces a blog post.

Motivation is a guest. Systems are the house. Build the house.
