GEO measurement is younger and less standardised. The tools are emerging, the metrics are still being defined, and some forms of AI visibility — ghost citations, synthesis without attribution — may never be directly measurable. But the core signals are knowable, the primary tools exist, and the measurement framework is clear enough to build a practical reporting system around today.

GEO success is not measured in clicks and rankings. It is measured in citation rate, brand mention frequency, and AI share-of-voice — signals that reflect influence in the answer layer, not the link layer. Building a GEO measurement practice means adding a new dashboard alongside your existing SEO one, not replacing it.

The Measurement Gap

Ghost citations — where your content influences an AI answer without being named — leave no traceable signal. Your prose shapes the response; your URL never appears. The closest proxy is tracking whether your brand name appears in the response text even without a link, which brand mention monitoring tools can capture.

Training data influence is entirely invisible. If your content was included in an AI model's training corpus, it may shape responses on an ongoing basis without any live retrieval event. There is currently no tool that measures this reliably.

Zero-click AI answers — where a user receives a complete response and ends the session without clicking — produce no referral traffic. A high citation rate with very low referral traffic is not a failure; it may indicate your brand is part of high-quality, complete answers that fully resolve the user's query. Separate the citation metric from the traffic metric in your reporting.

Any GEO measurement system undercounts real AI visibility. Build your reporting with this caveat acknowledged — the numbers you can measure are a floor, not a ceiling. Relative change over time is more meaningful than absolute figures.
