Free Plan and Session Limits
Swipe to show menu
A quick note on how the free plan works in practice. If you do a lot of work in a short period of time, especially when working with large files such as PDFs, you may eventually reach Claude's usage limits. When that happens, you'll see a message indicating when your access will reset.
How Sessions Work
Claude uses a five-hour rolling window for usage limits. For example, if you start using Claude heavily at 2:00 PM and reach your limit, your usage allowance will gradually reset around 7:00 PM, allowing you to continue working.
These limits apply to the Free Plan and, to a lesser extent, some paid plans as well.
When to Upgrade
For most users, the Free Plan is sufficient when getting started. Consider upgrading only if you regularly reach your usage limits or need access to additional features and higher capacity.
As your usage grows, you can explore the available subscription options and choose a plan that best fits your needs.
Start with the free plan and upgrade only when your usage consistently exceeds the available limits.
