Hallucinations
A hallucination occurs when Claude provides information that sounds confident and convincing but is actually incorrect. While AI models have become significantly more accurate over the past few years, mistakes can still happen.
For everyday tasks, this is often a minor issue. However, when accuracy is critical, such as with statistics, regulations, legal matters, medical information, or financial decisions, you should always verify important facts using reliable sources.
A useful rule of thumb: if you're going to act on a specific fact, take a moment to confirm it independently.
Knowledge Cutoff and Web Search
AI models are trained on large datasets and then released. They do not continuously learn from new events after training, which means they have a knowledge cutoff, a point after which they may not know about recent developments.
For example, if you ask about today's news with web search disabled, Claude may not be able to provide current information. With web search enabled, Claude can search the internet, review recent sources, and use that information to answer questions about current events and other time-sensitive topics.
As a general rule, if you need up-to-date information, enable web search. This allows Claude to supplement its training with current information and provide more relevant answers.
