Using Claude Safely

When you use Claude, the information you provide is processed by Anthropic's systems rather than staying solely on your local device. Depending on your account type and settings, some conversations may be used to improve Anthropic's models. If you're working with sensitive, confidential, or regulated information, it's important to review your organization's policies and Anthropic's privacy and data usage terms before sharing that data.
Your Privacy Controls
Claude gives you some control over how your data is handled. Open Settings → Privacy to review Anthropic's privacy options. From there, you can learn more about data usage, export your data, manage shared chats, and adjust settings related to location sharing and product improvement.
One of the most important settings is whether your chats and coding sessions can be used to help improve Anthropic's models. Depending on your personal, professional, or organizational requirements, you may choose to leave this enabled or disable it. The key point is to review the setting and make an informed decision based on your needs.
A Practical Rule
As a general guideline, avoid sharing:
- Passwords or account credentials
- Highly sensitive personal information
- Confidential client or patient data
- Proprietary business information or trade secrets
If you wouldn't be comfortable sharing the information with a third party, it's worth considering whether it should be entered into an AI tool.
Anthropic won't share them. It's that this is an online platform. Accidents happen. Security issues happen. As a rule of thumb, if you want to be risk-averse and unaffected by anything that goes wrong, keep that stuff out of your chats.
