Installing the Chrome Extension
Search the Chrome Web Store for Claude. You'll find the official extension (a link is included in the course resources). Click Add to Chrome or the equivalent option in your Chrome-based browser. Whether you use Chrome, Brave, Edge, or another Chromium browser, the process is largely the same.
After installation, you'll be prompted to sign in and authorise the extension. This gives Claude permission to access information from webpages you're viewing.
Once setup is complete, click the Claude icon in your browser, accept the beta notice if prompted, and complete the short onboarding process. You'll now have access to a familiar Claude chat interface directly inside your browser.
What Makes It Different?
The key difference is that Claude can understand the webpage you're currently viewing.
For example, if you're reading an article, you can ask:
What webpage are we currently looking at?
Claude can identify and discuss the content on the page without requiring you to copy and paste anything.
This transforms web content from something written for a general audience into something tailored to your specific situation. Instead of simply reading an article, you can ask Claude to interpret it through the lens of your goals, challenges, or questions.
Why It's Useful
Throughout this course, you've seen examples involving:
- Copying and pasting text
- Uploading PDFs
- Taking screenshots
- Sharing links
The Chrome extension removes many of those extra steps. If you regularly use Claude for research, learning, comparisons, or content review, it provides one of the fastest and most convenient ways to interact with information online.
Rather than moving content into Claude, Claude can work directly with the content you're already viewing.
Privacy Considerations
When you ask Claude about a webpage, the page content is sent to Anthropic for processing, similar to uploading a document in a chat.
As a result, you should exercise caution when viewing sensitive information such as:
- Banking portals
- Medical records
- Confidential company systems
- Private customer information
Treat webpage access with the same level of care you would when uploading files.
