Using Claude in Slack
Slack is where many modern teams spend most of their working day. Different departments, projects, and discussions live in separate channels, making it a central hub for communication. Claude integrates directly into Slack as an app that can participate in conversations and assist with tasks.
Installing Claude in Slack
In Slack, click More, then Tools, then Apps. Search for Claude and select Install.
You'll be redirected to the Slack Marketplace, where you'll authorise Claude to access your workspace and connect to your Claude subscription. After completing the authentication process, return to Slack and refresh the application. Claude will now appear as an available app.
Keep in mind that installation is often handled by a Slack workspace administrator rather than individual users.
Using Claude in Channels
One way to use Claude is by mentioning it in a channel, just as you would tag a colleague. For example:
@Claude please summarise this pipeline report and highlight any actions the team should take.
If Claude is not already a member of the channel, Slack will prompt you to add it.
You can attach files, ask questions about discussions, request summaries, or generate content for the team. Claude works particularly well as a quick decision-support tool during conversations. Examples include:
- Comparing two options and outlining pros and cons;
- Summarising lengthy discussions;
- Drafting updates for stakeholders;
- Turning meeting notes into action items;
- Explaining complex information in simpler terms.
Working with Files
Claude can analyse files shared in Slack, although support may vary depending on the file type and content.
In some cases, Claude may not be able to fully interpret uploaded data files. If that happens, a simple workaround is to open the file, copy the relevant content into the chat, and ask Claude to analyse the raw data directly.
This often produces better results and gives Claude immediate access to the information you want it to work with.
