Organising Conversations

If you head to Claude.ai and look at the left sidebar, you'll find a Projects tab. A Project is a dedicated workspace where you can store context about a specific area of your life, including files, instructions, and conversations. When you start a chat inside a Project, Claude automatically has access to that context, so you don't need to re-upload documents or re-explain the background every time.

Projects work best for topics you return to regularly, such as your children's sports activities, a wedding you're planning, a holiday, a client, a side business, or a house move. Add the relevant files, set up the context once, and every new conversation within that Project can continue with the information already in place.

Sarah's Project

Let's set one up Project for Sarah's work at Mitchell Stone Partners.

Go to Projects in the sidebar, click Create Project, name it Mitchell Stone Partners, and add a short description. Then scroll to the Files section and upload some useful context, such as examples of emails Sarah has previously sent to Chris, a one-page overview of the business, and the Q3 report. Those files stay in the Project, so if Sarah comes back tomorrow, next week, or next month, they're still available.

Now open a new chat inside the Project and type something simple, such as: Draft Chris's update on this month's pipeline. Claude automatically uses the files and context stored in the Project. Sarah doesn't need to re-upload documents or explain the background again.

This is the key difference. Earlier, creating the email for Chris required a detailed prompt that included information about the accounting firm, its size, the preferred tone, and the focus on financial details. With a Project, that context is stored once and reused across every conversation.

You can also move an existing conversation into a Project. If you start a chat and later realise it belongs in a specific Project, use the Add to Project option. The conversation is moved into that Project and gains access to its files and instructions.

Note
Note

Each Project has its own Instructions section where you can define how Claude should assist within that specific Project. For example, a work Project might use a professional tone with concise, bullet-point responses, while a personal Project might use a warmer, more conversational style. These instructions are saved with the Project and automatically apply to every chat inside it.
