Claude Cowork is an autonomous AI assistant that executes tasks on your computer by working with local files, applications, and tools to deliver a completed result based on a given goal.
Claude Cowork focuses on outcomes, not step-by-step prompts. You define the goal, and Claude handles the entire process automatically. It works directly on your desktop, interacting with local files, folders, and everyday applications, moving between them to gather and combine information without manual coordination.
Claude is especially useful for repetitive or time-consuming tasks, and it requires no technical background.
By automating the workflow, Claude helps complete tasks faster and ensures that important but tedious work, like reviewing data or feedback, actually gets done.
Download and open the Claude Desktop app. Claude Cowork is available through the desktop app for paid Claude plans, including Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise. ([Claude Help Center][1])
In Claude Desktop, open the Cowork workspace. This is where you assign tasks that Claude can complete using your computer, local files, connectors, plugins, and apps. ([Claude Help Center][2])
Before starting, give Claude access to the files or folders it should use. File reads and writes are limited to folders you connect, so Claude does not automatically access everything on your computer. ([Claude Help Center][1])
You can also connect tools like Google Drive, Gmail, Calendar, Slack, or other services if the task needs external context.
Write what you want Claude to complete. Focus on the final result, not every tiny step.
In regular chat, Claude can only respond to messages and cannot access your files. In Cowork, Claude can read, edit, and create files in selected folders, allowing it to complete tasks instead of just explaining them.
Thanks for your feedback!
