Editing specific sections with Copilot in Word

Copilot can rewrite an entire document — but most of the time you don't need that. Usually the draft is mostly fine, and only a few sections need work. Editing in place keeps the parts you like untouched.

To edit a section, highlight the text you want to change. Two ways to open Copilot on that selection:

  • Click the magic pen icon that appears next to the text;
  • Right-click and choose Copilot.

Once Copilot opens, you can type a custom prompt telling it exactly what to change — for example: make this more engaging, add more detail, or rewrite for a non-technical audience. The rest of the document stays as it is.

This works best for tightening descriptions, shifting tone, or filling in missing detail in one spot.

Auto-rewrite

Sometimes the meaning is right but the phrasing isn't. For that, Copilot has Auto-rewrite. Select a sentence, choose Auto-rewrite, and Copilot offers several alternative versions side by side.

You browse the options and pick the one that fits best. Good for:

  • Polishing language;
  • Avoiding repetition;
  • Replacing a sentence that sounds awkward or too formal.

The meaning stays the same — only the wording changes.

1. You have a paragraph that says exactly what you want, but the wording feels stiff. Which is the better fit — a custom Copilot prompt, or Auto-rewrite?

2. Why is editing one section at a time often better than asking Copilot to rewrite the whole document?
