Drafting Documents With Copilot In Word
Copilot is available in both the browser version of Word (via word.cloud.microsoft.com) and the desktop app. In both cases, you can access it from the Home tab using the Copilot icon in the top-right corner. If you don't see it in the desktop version, you may need to update Word by installing the latest version of Microsoft 365.
Two Ways To Use Copilot In Word
Via the Copilot panel (chat window)
Clicking the Copilot icon opens a chat interface on the right where you can enter prompts.
Directly inside the document
You may see a magic pen icon or an inline prompt field that lets you describe what you want to draft right where you're writing.
Structuring Your Prompts
To get the best results, structure your prompts clearly. A strong prompt should include:
- Goal — what you want to create;
- Context — where or how it will be used;
- Tone — e.g. professional, playful, persuasive;
- Data — any references or specifics to include.
Working With Generated Drafts
You can ask Copilot to draft proposals, marketing campaigns, or creative articles. Once a draft is generated, you can:
- keep it;
- regenerate a new version;
- edit it with follow-up prompts (e.g. replacing specific content).
If you're using the Copilot chat panel, you can also enable Edit with Copilot to automatically insert generated content directly into your document — no copy-pasting needed. You can then accept or undo the changes.
Starting With Bullet Points
A particularly effective workflow is to start with bullet points. By outlining your ideas first, you give Copilot more structure to work with. Simply highlight your bullet points and ask Copilot to turn them into a full document.
This approach often produces more accurate and relevant drafts, and helps you move from idea to polished document faster and more efficiently.
