Breaking Language Barriers With Copilot
Copilot can be a powerful tool for breaking down language barriers directly inside Outlook, allowing you to both understand incoming emails and respond in another language without leaving your inbox.
Understanding Emails In A Foreign Language
When receiving an email in a foreign language, Copilot offers two useful approaches.
Quick understanding with summaries
By using Summary by Copilot and adjusting the language, you can quickly grasp the key points of an email without translating everything word-for-word. This is ideal when you just need the main message or action items.
Full translation for detailed reading
If you need complete accuracy or context, you can open Copilot and prompt it to translate the entire email. This provides a full, line-by-line translation — especially useful for nuanced or important communications.
Writing Emails In Another Language
For outgoing emails, Copilot allows you to write in your preferred language and then translate your message into the recipient's language. This makes it easier to:
- communicate professionally across languages;
- avoid relying on external tools;
- maintain flow while writing.
You can translate directly inside the email draft using Copilot, or use the Copilot chat to perform the translation separately. The latter can be useful if you want to avoid using limited in-email Copilot credits, depending on your subscription.
Key Consideration
While Copilot provides strong translations, it is still important to double-check key details — such as numbers and product versions — before sending.
1. What is the fastest way to understand the main points of a long email written in a foreign language using Copilot?
2. You receive an email in a foreign language about a technical product with important specifications. Which approach is most appropriate?
