Definition

AI image generation tools each have distinct strengths, aesthetic tendencies, and use cases. This chapter compares the four primary tools used in this course and establishes when to use each one.

Like language models, image generation tools are not interchangeable. Each has a different training dataset, different aesthetic defaults, and different strengths. Running the same Style Compass prompt through Midjourney and DALL-E will produce noticeably different results — neither is universally better. The skill is knowing which tool fits which job.

Note
Note

Choosing the wrong tool for a task is a common source of frustration with AI image generation. Understanding the distinct character of each tool means you can make a confident choice upfront rather than spending time iterating in the wrong place.
