Now you focus on the most important skill in this course: how to communicate with Copilot.

Copilot understands natural language, but it still needs clear instructions. If your request is vague, it may guess and return incorrect results. To avoid this, you use a simple structure for every prompt.

The Three-Part Prompt Structure

Every prompt should include three parts: goal, output, and scope.

  • The goal defines what you want Copilot to do. Use clear action words like calculate, create, extract, or format;
  • The output defines how the result should be delivered. For example, a list in the chat, a table, a formula, or formatting in the sheet;
  • The scope defines where Copilot should look and what data to use. This prevents it from making incorrect assumptions.

Example of a Clear Prompt

Instead of writing a vague request, you combine all three parts into one instruction.

Note
Prompt

Calculate earners in the top 10% from Table1. List them in the chat, including names, job titles, and salaries.

This prompt is clear, specific, and gives Copilot everything it needs.

Using Natural Language

You do not need strict formatting. You can write in a natural way as long as all three parts are included.

For example, you can describe the task in a conversational sentence, but still define the goal, output, and scope clearly.

Using Agent Mode for Actions

When Agent Mode is enabled, Copilot can modify your spreadsheet directly.

For example, you can ask it to highlight the top 10% of earners using conditional formatting in Table1. Copilot will apply the change and explain what it did.

Everything was clear?

How can we improve it?
