What Are Gemini Projects?

Gemini Projects in Google Drive provide a dedicated workspace for working with a selected collection of files, folders, and other sources. Rather than determining where files are stored, a Project groups together relevant information so Gemini can use it as context when answering questions or generating new content.

Unlike folders, which organize files by location, Projects organize information by purpose. A single file can belong to multiple Projects without being moved or duplicated, making Projects ideal for bringing together all of the resources related to a particular task or area of work.

Creating and Using a Project

Projects can be created either from an existing Gemini conversation or directly from the Projects section in Google Drive. Once created, you can add additional files manually or allow Gemini to suggest relevant sources based on the project's topic. Depending on your settings, Gemini can also use information from other Workspace apps and the web to provide richer responses.

After a Project has been populated with sources, you can ask Gemini questions that require information from across the entire collection. Gemini can also generate new reports, tables, and other documents based on the Project's contents, which can then be exported to Google Workspace apps and even added back into the Project as new sources.

Sharing Projects with Collaborators

Projects can also be shared with collaborators. Depending on the permissions you grant, collaborators may be able to ask Gemini questions about the Project, or additionally manage its sources. This creates a shared AI-powered workspace where teams can explore information, generate content, and keep related resources together in one place.

By separating file storage from AI workspaces, Gemini Projects provide a powerful way to organize information around your work rather than around folder structures.
