One of the most powerful features of Claude is that you can **upload files** directly into a conversation. Claude supports a wide variety of file types, including PDFs, Word documents, images, and text files. There are two ways to upload a file:

- **Drag and drop** the file into the chat input box;
- Click the **plus (+) icon**, select the **paperclip menu item**, and choose the file from your device.

You can also try this in the built-in **Claude Code** workspace. Click the **plus (+) icon** in the **Files** panel and select a file from your device. The uploaded file will appear in the file tree, and Claude Code will be able to access it.

### A Few Things to Be Aware Of

Claude's file upload feature is powerful, but there are a few limitations to keep in mind. Some files may exceed the platform's **upload size limits** and cannot be processed. When uploading documents, remember that the contents are **sent to Anthropic for processing**, so you should only upload files that you have permission to share and that do not violate your organization's **privacy or security policies**. Finally, while Claude can accurately **understand and analyze document content**, it may not perfectly preserve the original **formatting, layout, or visual appearance**.
